Matt Fitzpatrick couldn't believe how well this TGL drop turned out
There are few moments in golf—and sports as a whole—that are less highlight-reel worthy than taking a drop. But what happened on Tuesday night at the SoFi Center defies the laws of physics so much that it needed to be shared.
New York Golf Club played a double-header and in Match No. 1, Matt Fitzpatrick found himself taking a drop in the rough on the fourth hole. But before we get to that, here was a pre-match tweet from TGL's director of turf Tanner Coffman showing just how juicy that rough is:
That is some U.S. Open-grade lettuce right there. But Tanner's prediction—at least, for one shot—didn't turn out to be true. Because when Fitzpatrick took his drop, somehow his golf ball did this:
How is that possible?! It looks like the ball is sitting on a tee!
As you can see, Fitzpatrick was as shocked as anyone. And he put his hands up as to indicate he did nothing illegal. The hole is named "Big Apple" so it would make sense that New York would get a home bounce there, but still, that's crazy.
Fitz and New York went on to win the hole, but, sadly for them, there weren't a lot of other positives on Tuesday night as the team dropped both matches to put them in danger of missing the playoffs. Maybe next time they should try hitting more shots into the rough before Fitzpatrick's turn.
